Shortly before reaching Franklin Pass, we reached the ridgeline and were able to see the view to the east. From the vantage point of this photo, much of the remaining hike is visible. Whitney is the large peak in the backgroud, just left of centre. Pacman Lake, where we camped the night before our ascent, is at the foot the cliffs. The valley with Crabtree Meadows stretches from there to the lower left into the Kern River valley, which runs to the right behind the rock outcrop in the centre.

This snow bank was visible from the trail for much of the rest of the day.

Let's just say salt is a precious resource in the High Sierra.

At Franklin Pass, the rocky ridge we were hiking along hits a long sandy ridge that the trail switchbacks down into the valley far below.

Looking back at the ridgeline from just over Franklin Pass. The trail runs along the back side of this ridge to the snow bank where we at our lunch.

Another shot of the snow bank with a view. You can tell why the trail follows the ridge toward the right to Franklin Pass rather than dropping down right away.
